An Elegant Hallowedding With A Flower Ghoul
With Monica Z Photography capturing the magic, Christie, a dedicated Realtor, and Kurtis, a skilled Electrician, took their love story to new heights. The ceremony took place at Embers, an iconic 100+ year old building in Rensselaer, Indiana on October 13, 2017.
Our offbeat wedding at a glance:
We commemorated our special day with a unique Halloween-themed wedding on Friday the 13th. The prelude to our big day included an unforgettable photo shoot at Niles Scream Park in Michigan, where we encouraged our guests to don their most creative costumes. In fact, we even hosted a costume contest during the reception, reflecting our desire for a celebration that was truly one-of-a-kind and a perfect reflection of our personalities.
And let’s be honest, who needs a traditional flower girl when you can have a ‘flower goul’ stealing the show?
Tell us about the ceremony and your flower goul:
As we exchanged our vows with Jonny officiating, the atmosphere was filled with joy and laughter. We opted for a unique and personalized ceremony, where we read our own heartfelt promises to each other. Ditching traditional elements like unity candles or sand ceremonies, we chose something that truly reflected our fun-loving spirits – a cocktail ceremony! With red and blue potions poured over dry ice in a skull glass, the result was an ethereal ‘love potion’ effect.
Our dear friend Mike brought his own brand of flair as our flower ghoul, adding to the whimsical ambiance.
Tell us about your reception:
The ceremony took place in an extraordinary venue with a rich history, dating back over 100 years. To add an eerie twist, the staff surprised us by donning vintage marching band uniforms and prosthetic zombie makeup. In preparation for the big day, I crafted and customized sugar cookies shaped like voodoo dolls with my bridesmaids. We had spent months collecting one-of-a-kind decorative skulls to serve as unique centerpieces for each table.
The evening was filled with creative touches, including a coffin-themed photo booth and an exquisite cake designed by Designer Desserts. Many of our guests got into the spirit by arriving in costume, which added to the festive atmosphere. We even hosted a costume contest during the reception, making it a night to remember. To commemorate our special day, my bridesmaids reworked the classic ‘Monster Mash’ into a heartfelt tribute to our relationship and performed it as a toast to us.
In lieu of a traditional guest book, we had our loved ones sign a photo album featuring our engagement photos taken at a local haunted attraction.
What was your most important lesson learned?
The process of finding the perfect dress was a challenging one. I was determined not to settle for a traditional gown, given that our wedding was anything but conventional. Despite my initial attempts to have a custom-made dress created, I was left feeling unimpressed with the final result. Instead, I opted for a off-the-rack find at the local mall, which after some alterations, turned out to be exactly what I had been searching for.
In retrospect, my wedding advice would be to remain open-minded and flexible when it comes to your big day. Don’t be afraid to admit defeat and move on from an idea that isn’t working, even if you’ve invested significant time and effort into it. Sometimes taking a risk and doing something unconventional can lead to unexpected rewards and a more memorable experience.
